November is the time to be heading to a winter harbour where you can stay snug and safe until April. Our preference was for a berth in the downtown of big cities. Lots to see, lots to do. With advanced planning and a bit of luck we secured some real beauties.
Winter Ports
Our travels led us to the port of Marmaris in southwestern Turkey. Our original plan had been to cruise onward around the Mediterranean but the outbreak of war and civil unrest in the region made that an unwise plan. So we have stayed in the Marmaris area, taking advantage of its many wonders.
Marmaris is a fantastic cruising area, probably the best in the Mediterranean. Sheltered waters in both directions make passage to the myriad coves and bays a delight. Most of the coast is a wild protected area where pristine anchorages abound. There are many archeological sites to explore.
Marmaris city is a delight of beaches, restaurants and shopping bazaars which can be enjoyed at very favourable rates. People are friendly and the climate is excellent. Plentiful inexpensive flights bring travellers down from europe in about four hours.
Here are some fine photos of Marmaris and the area.
Marmaris is located at the beginning of the beautiful Bozburun Peninsula, a cruiser's paradise.
Liz is moored in Netsel Marina. A quiet life on the very edge of Marmaris. She is very safe there when we are away.
